"With farmhouses, it was common for parts of porches to be enclosed as interior needs grew," says architectural designer Terry Pylant. "We designed the rear of the house to reflect that tradition, as if the flanking rooms were once part of the porch." A neutral palette connects the porch to the home's exterior and its pastoral setting. I was able to photograph other parts of the property including the surrounding porches and guest rooms of the beautiful Idea House.
The PR team has coordinated extensive coverage for the project with newspapers, magazines, television outlets and bloggers. This team was awarded in 2012 the coveted Southern Living Custom Builder of the Year – one of the deciding factors in choosing them to build the Idea House at Fontanel,” McNulty said. Renowned interior decorator Phoebe Howard chose a neutral palette of creams and soft grays mixed with blues and greens to create a gracious, elegant yet relaxed feel — a fresh take on Southern comfort. The great room and its adjacent porches encourage gatherings by day, yet the “unbundled” design allows guests a sense of separation and privacy at night. We were introduced to the Southern Living folks, including Jen (who is the Southern Living media contact, great gal!), Lindsay Bierman, Editor in Chief for Southern Living, and Designer, Phoebe Howard.

Also, several other bloggers covered the house and it was so good to see them all, including Dana Tucker, Blonde Mom Blog, The Decorologist, and LLH Designs. Met up with the Ballard Designs gang and it’s always fun to hang out with them too. They are one of our big sponsors at Haven this year and we can’t wait for that either. The big wrap around porch came in handy, with many spilling into the courtyard.

For the primary bath, Historical Concepts designed floating walls for the vanities that also function as room dividers for the tub/sink area and the large dressing room. "This allows both areas to share light and air through the entire space," says Terry. Phoebe gave the vanities a more modern look by rapping each with honed marble and then using refined limed oak for the cabinet doors.

Bathing the kitchen in color creates a cozy, friendly feel. "The one thing I had to have was white knobs," says Phoebe. Cable railings wrap the porches off of every room to allow for clear lines of vision to the stunning gardens below. Windows with 4 over 4 divided lights are often seen on historic farmhouses, so the team carried them throughout each structure for a consistent look. Every year, Southern Living selects a project team to develop one “Idea House” that inspires consumers to experiment in their homes and gardens. We put together an all-star team to design the ultimate Nashville house. Mimicking an old farmhouse, the main house revolves around one large living room flanked by a hardworking kitchen on one end that boasts a laundry room with enviable laundry room shelving. The exterior boasts a wraparound front porch with extra-deep porch swings and completely a separate rear-dining porch that is connected to the living room and dining room. Outside the main house, Historical Concepts designed several guest houses and bunkies each with their own kitchenette and porch so that company could have their own privacy.

Built by Nashville-basedCastle Homes, the main house boasts a large barn-like living room. Rustic ceiling beams, sliding barn doors, and dark wood floors and entry doors are softened with lots of patterned fabrics and upholstery, happy greens and blues, and white-washed wood slat walls. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to photograph the main house before the interiors are showcased in the August edition of Southern Living magazine. In the back, a porch is nestled between the dining room and primary bedroom.

The firm has received multiple awards for architectural excellence, including the 2010 Arthur Ross Award, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s highest accolade for a body of work. The firm has also been featured extensively in publications devoted to architecture and interior design. This widespread recognition confirms Historical Concept’s philosophy of drawing from the past to the design the architecture of today—and tomorrow. I get invited to some of the best events and last week was invited up to Nashville to preview the newly opened Southern Living Ideahouse on the Fontanel property. I love touring homes and to get to experience the ideahouse with several other bloggers was so much fun.

Birmingham, AL – The Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel respects historic tradition and reflects timeless Southern style. The home was inspired by a 150 year-old Middle Tennessee farmhouse in Leipers Fork, and designed with guests in mind, on a cozy, comfortable scale. The décor is inviting with its warm, neutral palette and use of reclaimed wood beams and antiques. The garden is meant to welcome guests, while the “weekend project gardens” help solve common gardening dilemmas.
This is another guesthouse suite that connects with the porch. Our 2013 Idea House is now the Inn at Fontanel, a six-room boutique hotel outside Nashville. With six employees and someone to care for guests around the clock, the attention here is as personal as it gets.
Later that evening, we gathered once again at the Ideahouse for the grand opening party and that was a treat too. Lots of good food and drinks for a crowd of about 250. Many Nashville dignitaries and country celebs were there. The other area we got to photograph was the guesthouse. It was painted in darker tones, mostly neutral browns and creams, but very cozy and inviting.
